Kirsten Sundberg Lunstrum’s “On Moving Home”

October 31, 2019

Home is different for everyone. It can be a place or a person. There are memories attached to it that can be good or bad.

Sometimes when one finds a “home” they will always think of it as their home. Even though there could be more than one home, there will always be one where one refers to their “true home.”

Life goes on and never stays stagnant. Someone could move away because that is where their life takes them yet still yearns to go “home.” Not everyone is successful with returning home, instead they just move on with their life.

Sometimes it is necessary to leave behind stability and a “good life” and just go back to familiarity. Lifestyles could be different. Wanting to raise a family how one grew up then the environment they are currently in because they believe it would be a better life. A urban versus suburbans/rural lifestyles are completely different. Everyone belongs somewhere, and they just have to find out where. Each setting is a different experience for everyone. It is where they are comfortable and feel like they fit in.

More to come. Warning: this is still choppy and a work in progress.

Tara Conklin’s “The Explorer”

October 22, 2019

Some people can go through life without having a “home.” With no attachment to a particular place as a home, one is free to wander and be an explorer.

How one views home is subjective. It is different for everyone. It can be influenced by other people, but once one is able to form their own opinions, it is shaped by the individual.

There are people who have a “home” and others who do not. “Home” can be a physical thing or an idea/concept. The word “home” can be a literal place, or even people.

Although there are a lot of people who search for home their whole lives, and they either find it or they don’t. Yet not everyone has to be looking for a home. They can be happy with being able to wander. Sometimes that is enough.

In the end, everyone is different. “Home” means something different to each individual. One’s own experience is shaped by a lot of things. Environment, society, culture, people (family and friends) are examples of what can shape one’s ideas, opinions, and experience.

Justin Hodgson’s “A Post-Production Turn”

October 17, 2019

Justin Hodgson’s “A Post-Production Turn: New Media, New Practice, New Ontology” is complex and has many layers. There is the video, the video’s transcript, as well as the online journal article. Each part brings a different experience and works better together rather than individually.

Watching the video remediation of Justin Hodgson’s A Post-Production Turn: New Media, New Practice, New Ontology was distracting and confusing. The video was unexpected and left you thinking “what just happened?” after it was finished.

For the overall purpose of the remediation, I believe that it accomplished it’s purpose. Although confusing, it still worked, at least when you think about it, it was successful in what it was trying to do. The video was showing different types of remediation.

The transcript of the video, “Microsoft Word – Hodgson Post Truth Something or Other” helped to understand what Justin was saying in the video itself. Which sometimes was hard to hear because of everything going on throughout the video.

The transcript made more sense than the video alone. After reading it (the transcript), it made me appreciate the video more than I did before. There were moments when I wondered why Justin chose the imagery he chose with his word choices. The imagery was vivid and used something more commonly known with a topic that not as many people know. There were even moments when I wondered why Justin chose what words to combined. It was interesting reading words that he had made up by combining certain words. Even though the words were made up, they still somehow made sense.

The online journal article, “A Post-Production Turn: New Media, New Practice, New Ontology” explains the background of the project overall. It was interesting to read why and how this project came to be. One can go without reading the article, but reading it enhances the overall experience.

And so, Justin Hodgson’s project was complex with different layers. The layers worked better with one another. All of the parts enhances one’s experience of this project. If experiencing this project without any of the three parts, it would not be a good one. Justin was able to achieve remediation through his project that made sense even when it didn’t.

“A Bánh Mì for Two” is a feel-good story abo “A Bánh Mì for Two” is a feel-good story about food, family, and self-discovery.

Dual POVs: Lan, who lives in Sai Gon, wants to be the perfect daughter and fulfill “expectations,” all the while dealing with the grief of losing her father. Vivi is a Vietnamese-American who comes to Vietnam for the first time, wanting to learn more about her family and herself. Their love of food connects them.

I wasn’t expecting to get emotional as I did.

“A Bánh Mì for Two” was what I needed growing up. Stories with characters who look like me are coming to traditional publishing in YA. And people even know about it!

If only the blog was real! I would use it the next time I go to Vietnam. It needs to be a thing.

It was relatable. However, I wished for more at moments.
A few times, I had to stop to look up words. Since I can understand Vietnamese more than I can read it, I had to listen to the words to understand what they were. It would have been an even better experience if I had listened to the audiobook.

“A Bánh Mì for Two” was one of my anticipated books of the year, and I am honored to be gifted a copy.
