Unraveling Chaos

unraveling the chaos that are my thoughts

The Singles Table Blog Tour

November 19, 2021

“A beautifully told rom-com that’s full of laughs, heart, and scorching sexual tension.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

The Singles Table, the diverse swoon-worthy romantic comedy from Sara Desai, is now available!

Opposites attract in this laugh-out-loud romantic comedy about a free-spirited lawyer who is determined to find the perfect match for the grumpy bachelor at her cousin’s wedding.

After a devastating break-up, celebrity-obsessed lawyer Zara Patel is determined never to open her heart again. She puts her energy into building her career and helping her friends find their happily-ever-afters. She’s never faced a guest at the singles table she couldn’t match, until she crosses paths with the sinfully sexy Jay Dayal.

Former military security specialist Jay has no time for love. His life is about working hard, staying focused, and winning at all costs. When charismatic Zara crashes into his life, he’s thrown into close contact with exactly the kind of chaos he wants to avoid. Worse, they’re stuck together for the entire wedding season.

So they make a deal. She’ll find his special someone if he introduces her to his celebrity clients. But when their arrangement brings them together in ways they never expected, they realize that the perfect match might just be their own.

Review

Going into The Singles Table, I didn’t know it was part of the Marriage Game series. You can read The Singles Table as a standalone without any confusion. I haven’t read anything from Sara Desai before, but I own The Dating Plan. After reading The Singles Table, The Dating Plan has sparked my interest more. So I’m planning to read that sometime soon.

Just from reading the summary, The Singles Table captured me with all of my favorite buzz words; grumpy x sunshine, opposites attract, and romantic comedy.

I can’t picture things in my head. It’s a condition called aphantasia. That aside, the whole time I was reading The Singles Table, I was able to imagine it as a rom-com film/tv series. Sometimes you want a rom-com to take you away from your life. Something cheesy and entertaining in the best possible way.

Zara is a walking contradiction. Not only that, but she’s a mess and relatable. When someone is happy all of the time without a care in the world, it just seems fake to me, and it irks me. But with Zara, it was just enough that it doesn’t cross the line. She may be happy and free-spirited, but she has depth. She isn’t naive but rather chooses to see the positive instead of the negative. Jay was so grumpy, and I loved it. Even though they were opposites, they understood one another on some level. The only thing that I didn’t like was how Jay was presented in the beginning with how he talked and what he said. But besides that, I enjoyed reading The Singles Table.

The Singles Table has a full-circle moment. It begins and ends with a paintballing scene, which was something I loved. Their meeting was so funny that I couldn’t help but laugh the whole time I was reading it. The Singles Table as a whole was entertaining but also heartfelt. I can’t wait to read more from Sara Desai.

Excerpt

“So what kind of woman are you looking for? Let me guess. Professional. Sophisticated. Classy. Intelligent. Basically, Lucia but younger, or do you like a little Mrs. Robinson between the sheets?” She took another bite of her hot dog. Was there any better food?

“My relationship with Lucia is strictly professional,” Jay said. “But yes, I’d be interested in someone similar.”

“So, you want a mini-me,” she teased. “I mean a mini-you. Not me. Obviously. Lucia is pretty much the opposite of me, which is another reason I knew that job wouldn’t work out.”

“You have ketchup on your cheek.” He took a napkin and gently dabbed it at the corner of her mouth.

Desire flooded her veins followed by a wave of desolation. She could easily fall for a man like Jay. Smart, handsome, ambitious, successful, and yet she sensed a longing in him, a secret Jay waiting to be free.

“Is it gone?” Her voice came out in a whisper.

He leaned in and studied her with a serious intensity that took her breath away. He was so close she could see the gentle dip in his chin, the dark stubble of his five-o’clock shadow even though it couldn’t be much past four o’clock. His lips were firm and soft, his mouth the perfect size for kissing. She drew in his scent: pine and mountains and the rich, earthy scent of the soil she’d turned in the garden when her family was whole and she never had to wonder whose house she was in when she woke up in the morning.

But this wasn’t the time to be thinking about being held in Jay’s strong arms or what it would be like to kiss him, or how just being near him calmed all the wayward thoughts in her head. She was supposed to be concentrating on finding him a match and where she should get autographed when he made the promised celebrity introduction.

“We should go.” She jumped up so abruptly her half-eaten hot dog fell to the grass. “I have to get back to the office, and I don’t want to exceed your two-hour-and-forty-five-minute time limit.”

Jay picked up the hot dog and carried it to the nearest bin. “When do you want to meet again?”

His question sent a curious thrill rocketing through her veins. She hadn’t put him off with her rambling, or her quest for the perfect hot dog, or even the uncomfortable questions she’d asked as they lounged in the sun. She couldn’t have been more excited if he’d asked her on second date. Except he wasn’t really interested in her that way, and she needed to keep that in mind. The last thing she wanted was to get into a Cyrano situation where she would be forced to help someone else win the heart of the man she loved. She made a mental note to rewatch the 1973 Broadway version of the play with its soaring ballads and rousing word- and swordplay as a reminder of the heartbreak that could result.

She pulled out her phone and pretended to study the screen to stop herself from saying something stupid like how about tonight? “Hmmm. I have a big settlement meeting on Friday so the rest of my week is shot. I’ll have to let you know.”

If he noticed her cool dismissal, he didn’t react. Instead, he said the one thing that would ensure she wouldn’t be able to sleep until she saw him again. “I’ll be waiting.”

What It Takes to Move On Release Blitz

November 2, 2021

What It Takes to Move On by J. Santiago is now live!

Marco Rivera is at a crossroads. The professional goalkeeper is at the height of his career. But when the mother of his son dies unexpectedly, he must make some difficult decisions. Leaving his job behind, he is determined to insert himself into his son’s life and be the hands-on father he’s always wanted to be.

But first, he must gain the trust of Diana Nieves.

Diana has everything under control. Mother of two and guardian to Marco’s son, she manages her family, her ex-husband, and the local high school with deft efficiency. Dealing with Marco Rivera though might be more than she can handle.

Forced to work together, Diana and Marco need to figure out how to heal a grieving teenager, rein in a wayward girl, and fight their increasing attraction to each other. In the midst of tragedy, they have to decide what it takes to move on.

Review

Marco wants to be the best father he can be. So when Cyn, the mother of his son, dies, he comes back to become a full-time father. He never expected Diana.
Diana is Cyn’s best friend. Everything she knows about Marco, she heard from Cyn. So she didn’t know what she was getting into when he came for Ale.
I never read anything from J. Santiago. All I knew was reading the synopsis intrigued me enough to want to read What It Takes to Move On. I was already down a rabbit hole of reading single-parent stories, so why not? I didn’t regret it at all. I enjoyed reading What It Takes to Move On. I loved all of the relationships; Marco and Diana’s, Ale and Marco’s, Mia and Ale’s. Usually, when I read, I would highlight my favorite quotes. But I didn’t do that for What It Takes to Move On. I was so captivated by reading that I didn’t want to stop.

April May Fall Release Blitz

October 26, 2021

April May Fall by Christina Hovland is now live!

April Davis totally has her life in order. Ha! Not really. Yes, she’s the Calm Mom—a social influencer with a reputation for showing moms how to stay calm and collected through yoga—but behind the scenes, she’s barely holding it all together. Raising tiny humans alone is exhausting, but that’s just the chewed-up cherry on the melted sundae of her life. Her kids aren’t behaving, her husband left her for his skydiving instructor, and her top knot proves she hasn’t showered in days.

Then a live video of the “always calm” April goes viral…and she’s most definitely not. Enter Jack Gibson, April’s contact at the media conglomerate that has purchased April’s brand. The too-sexy-for-his-own-good Jack will help clean up April’s viral mess, and even work with her to expand her influence, but toddler tea parties and a dog with a penchant for peeing on his shoes were definitely not part of the deal.

Now April’s calm has jumped ship quicker than her kids running from their vegetables. Not to mention, the sparks flying between her and Jack have her completely out of her depth. Forget finding her calm—April’s going to need a boatload of margaritas just to find her way back to herself again.

Review

She laughed because she wasn’t a phoenix. No one burned her to ashes, even though Kent had truly tried. No, she wasn’t a phoenix. She was April. And April may fall, but she always gets right back up again.

April May Fall is book three of the Mommy Wars series. I didn’t know that going in, so this is the first book I’ve ever read from Christina Hovland. So it can be read as a standalone.
April is in the process of launching her brand, “The Calm Mom.” Unfortunately, in one of her live streams, she goes viral for all of the wrong reasons. Jack comes to save the day; he’s Mr. Fix It. He is willing to do whatever possible to help April become a successful influencer.
Jack and April’s family was just so cute. I loved Jack right off the bat. His earlier thoughts were funny because you knew it would happen since it is a romance novel. I think you will know what I mean when you read it in chapter three. I love quotes, so the incorporation of quotes at the beginning of each character was something I enjoyed very much. In the end, April was able to find herself and be who Jack knew she always was.
After finishing April May Fall, it made me fall into a hole of reading the single parent trope. The majority of the books after were about single parents. When I get the chance, I will be reading the other books in the Mommy Wars series.

“A Bánh Mì for Two” is a feel-good story abo “A Bánh Mì for Two” is a feel-good story about food, family, and self-discovery.

Dual POVs: Lan, who lives in Sai Gon, wants to be the perfect daughter and fulfill “expectations,” all the while dealing with the grief of losing her father. Vivi is a Vietnamese-American who comes to Vietnam for the first time, wanting to learn more about her family and herself. Their love of food connects them.

I wasn’t expecting to get emotional as I did.

“A Bánh Mì for Two” was what I needed growing up. Stories with characters who look like me are coming to traditional publishing in YA. And people even know about it!

If only the blog was real! I would use it the next time I go to Vietnam. It needs to be a thing.

It was relatable. However, I wished for more at moments.
A few times, I had to stop to look up words. Since I can understand Vietnamese more than I can read it, I had to listen to the words to understand what they were. It would have been an even better experience if I had listened to the audiobook.

“A Bánh Mì for Two” was one of my anticipated books of the year, and I am honored to be gifted a copy.
