The Emperor

March 15, 2022

Summary

A bargain. A demon. A club. The Bratva. A Goddess. And, the thread of Magick pulsing through everything they do.

Is being hopeful an exercise in naivety, or is it the thing that fuels them?

Dimitri

I shouldn’t have claimed her – but I did, and she claimed me right back. But having a Tarot Reader and Witch as my Queen complicates matters. Having her wasn’t supposed to raise the stakes, but it did, and I’ll be damned if I let her go.

Corinne

I watch the uneasiness flicker in his eyes. The threat hasn’t been quelled, the ground is shaky beneath us, and with every new member I meet, I look into the depths of their soul and wonder if they’ll be the one to betray us – because betrayal is coming – it’s written in the cards, I just need to figure out who.

Review

“I’m here.” He was here—it would be okay—I wasn’t alone anymore.

Every time I read something from Erin Mc Luckie, I just love her more. Just when I think I know what I like, I have a new favorite by the time I’m done reading.

Since I bonded with The Empress, I didn’t think The Emperor would top it. But, boy, was I wrong! Even though The Empress will always have a special place in my heart, there’s just something about The Emperor.

The Emperor picks up where The Empress left off. I’m glad I decided to read The Empress again before starting The Emperor. I believe that reading the duet back to back made my experience even better than it could be without doing so. The Empress laid out the foundation of what would be The Tarot Club series. The background. The Emperor, in comparison, is the story playing out.

Since it’s called The Emperor, is it weird to want more Dimitri than what was given? Or is that just me? I couldn’t get enough of him and wanted more. Every time we get a glimpse of Dimitri’s perspective, I didn’t think it was enough. I know that It’s Corrine’s journey, and I love her too, but I guess it’s just wishful thinking.

Dimitri smiled at me, and I was suddenly aware that I was experiencing a lot of firsts with this man. It was as if before him I had simply been going through the motions or living without actually experiencing life itself.

Relationships have their ups and downs. What Corrine and Dimitri went through would either make or break a couple. The beginning was rough with a certain event. Then not knowing where they stood with one another. All of the mixed signals. It could’ve been easily fixed with communication. But then again, I also understand. It’s sometimes difficult to communicate. Even through the confusion, one thing is certain, Corrine and Dimitri love each other, even if they aren’t sure about the other’s feelings when it’s clear as day. It’s the type of relationship that is “us versus the world.” They will be there for one another, no matter what. They understand and complement one another.

“I am a king amongst men.”
“My actions will always bother others.”
“Am I others?”
“You are my queen—my Empress.”

Corrine is finally free from her picture perfect life, able to be herself. There was a lot of growth in The Emperor. In Corrine, Dimitri and Corrine’s relationship, and more. We heard about the other Tarot Club members and had little glimpses in The Empress. But in The Emperor, we actually meet them and see their dynamic/relationship with Corrine present day. It makes me want to know more about them. With the first duet complete, I can’t wait for the rest of The Tarot Club series to continue with The High Priestess coming July 7, 2022.

Welcome to the Dark Side

March 9, 2022

“We deserve each other ’cause we get each other. I know the heart of ya and you know the heart of me.”

Welcome to the Dark Side is my favorite book in the Fallen Men series. When I love a book, I have learned that I either over highlight that it looks like a child’s coloring book. Or I’m too focused and interested that I forget to highlight. I cried so hard at a certain point in Welcome to the Dark Side. You probably know what I’m talking about.

I can’t stop gushing about Zeus. Zeus and Loulou’s relationship may seem strange and wrong to some people. But it makes sense to me. It’s sweet. At first, I found that Loulou being the same age as Zeus’s daughter Harley Rose was weird. But as I read Welcome to the Dark Side, I was able to look past that. Loulou lives two different lives; Lousie and Loulou. Lousie, the perfect society girl, and Loulou working in the seedy side of town is someone her family looks down upon.

When Zeus and Loulou met, it was in the midst of a MC war. With all the gunshots, Loulou’s first instinct wasn’t to go to her parents for help but instead to run to Zeus. She somehow knew that he would be able to save her from everything happening. Zeus went to jail, and Loulou and Zeus became pen pals. He became a big part of her life, even from inside prison. Loulou couldn’t talk to anyone, but at least she had Zeus to talk to. Life kept hitting Loulou hard, but Zeus was with her, even from far away. Zeus was Loulou’s “Guardian Monster,” and Loulou was Zeus’s “Little Warrior”.

Lessons in Corruption

March 9, 2022

“I’d wanted to shed my old skin, those old connections, but did I really want to do a 180?”

Before reading Lessons in Corruption, I haven’t read anything by Giana Darling. I kept hearing about the Fallen Men series but was hesitant. To tell you the truth, I held out starting the Fallen Men series because I heard mixed things about Lessons in Corruptions. Honestly, it took me a bit to get into the book. I tried reading Lessons in Corruptions a few times. But, so many factors interfered with my reading; timing, headspace, and attention. These are just some of the reasons. But once I got into it, I regret not reading the Fallen Men series sooner.

I understood the mixed feelings, though, because there was something I can’t put my finger on that makes Lessons in Corruption as well as King and Cress not my favorite. The other couples are more interesting to me. This is funny because people love King and Cress, and they have more than one book about them. Lessons in Corruption sets the foundation of the series. The book introduces the other characters and the world I’ve come to love. There’s just something about this world that makes me want to keep coming back.

If this sounds negative, that’s not my intent. Cress loves books, and I can relate to that. King and Cress together make sense even though it doesn’t look like it. In some ways, I can connect to Cress, even though there are a few things I understand or don’t like. It is all subjective, and it’s just my opinion. I’m glad I gave Lessons in Corruption a chance. After reading Lessons in Corruption, I fell into a deep hole, reading the Fallen Men series back to back, with a few other books mixed in between.

“A Bánh Mì for Two” is a feel-good story abo “A Bánh Mì for Two” is a feel-good story about food, family, and self-discovery.

Dual POVs: Lan, who lives in Sai Gon, wants to be the perfect daughter and fulfill “expectations,” all the while dealing with the grief of losing her father. Vivi is a Vietnamese-American who comes to Vietnam for the first time, wanting to learn more about her family and herself. Their love of food connects them.

I wasn’t expecting to get emotional as I did.

“A Bánh Mì for Two” was what I needed growing up. Stories with characters who look like me are coming to traditional publishing in YA. And people even know about it!

If only the blog was real! I would use it the next time I go to Vietnam. It needs to be a thing.

It was relatable. However, I wished for more at moments.
A few times, I had to stop to look up words. Since I can understand Vietnamese more than I can read it, I had to listen to the words to understand what they were. It would have been an even better experience if I had listened to the audiobook.

“A Bánh Mì for Two” was one of my anticipated books of the year, and I am honored to be gifted a copy.
