R.L. Perez is a new author to me. Of course, anything mythology-related, especially Greek/Roman, will automatically draw me in. So when I first saw the title and cover, I was intrigued. But it was the summary that hooked me.
Ivy & Bone is a Hades and Persephone retelling with a twist. It is told from alternating dual points of view. Prudence “Prue” is a powerful witch who has lost her twin sister. Still mourning, she is willing to do anything to get her back, even by making a deal with the devil. Cyrus is the ruler of the Underworld. He is the youngest of five Princes of Hell but the most powerful of his family, who is against him and doesn’t respect him. They had unlocked the Underworld gates, unleashing the spirits within when Cyrus appeared. Prue and Cyrus must work together to close the gates and save the mortal realm from destruction.
I read Ivy & Bone at the right time and place. It’s autumn, and there are witches. It is fate how the name Prue is uncommon, and I’m rewatching the original Charmed for the nth time. Charmed is about sisters who are witches, and the oldest sister is named Prue. Prue’s family in Ivy & Bone having ‘p’ names is something else they have in common.
Cyrus and Prue’s relationship wasn’t instalove, which I appreciated. The banter was fun to read. Reading about cute and fluffy relationships is not always fun; sometimes, I want to read about morally grey characters. There are times when villains are better. Villains were not born villains, but rather, they are created. The writer did their job correctly when the reader can see why the villains are the way they are and empathize with them.
I’m pretty sure I would’ve been able to finish reading in one day if I had started at a different time. Every time I paused reading, there was something always pulling me back. I wanted to know what happened. I will be waiting impatiently for Thorn & Ash to come out in March 2023.
