Review
“Tell me I’m not alone in this, chipmunk.” “You’re not.”
Jenni Bara knows how to weave different storylines together and make them cohesive and relatable. Her Becoming an Evans series is about the Evans family. Each book focuses on a different member of the family and their relationships; love, friendship, and family. There is no one definition of family; they come in many forms. It doesn’t always mean related by blood, but rather the people who are there for you no matter what and love you unconditionally.
More Than a Story is about Corey and Taran. They are not new characters. They were introduced in earlier books in the series. Although you don’t have to read the books in order, I suggest you do so to enjoy the Evans family fully. Even though Corey is not an Evans by birth, he is an honorary Evans. They view him as one of them. It took me a bit to realize that we had met Taran before. All the characters in the series are connected in one way or another. It makes it feel like it’s a small world. What are the chances with the number of people in the world? But the connections and how it all plays out make the stories more interesting. Corey and Taran’s relationship was interesting; I enjoyed the banter and how they understood one another.
As soon as the ARC (advanced reader’s copy) of More Than a Story came out, I wanted to read it. But I had another book to finish and wanted to have my full attention on it. Me being me, I was impatient and started it at 1 AM, fully knowing that I wouldn’t go to sleep until I read about half of it. I picked up where I left off as soon as I opened my eyes, wanting to know what would happen next. I was so captivated by the story that I finished it in one day!
More Than a Story was an emotional roller coaster for me. I knew that it was 5 stars for me, about 30% into reading. There were a lot of emotions for me during the first half. But, by the time I finished, it didn’t disappoint! I loved More Than a Story. Honestly, if a book made me cry, I’m likely to give it a higher rating. The only thing I didn’t like was the miscommunication. I don’t like the miscommunication trope as a whole. I understand that it makes it realistic, and there is a time and a place for it, and it works if done well, but it tends to erks me the majority of the time I come across it.
I can’t wait for the next installment of the Becoming an Evans series with More Than Myself in November 2022.
Thank you, Jenni Bara, for an ARC.
